Edify Energy Proposes 2.4 GWh Solar-Storage Hybrid in Victoria, Boosting Australia's Renewable Pipeline

ree

Renewable energy company Edify Energy has proposed a significant solar-plus-storage development in Australia, featuring a 300 MW solar photovoltaic plant paired with a 300 MW / 2,400 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS). This hybrid facility, known as the Nowingi Solar Power Station, is to be built on a 639-hectare site located approximately 50 kilometers south of Mildura, in northwestern Victoria.

The company has submitted its proposal to the federal government under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act, seeking approval to proceed with the project. Plans include constructing a new substation to connect the facility to the national grid via AusNet’s existing 220 kV transmission infrastructure crossing the site.

The site is currently used for agriculture (grazing and cropping). Edify Energy stated in its EPBC documentation that the project design will accommodate co-use with sheep grazing, allowing the continued agricultural use of the land post-development.

Pending regulatory approval, Edify anticipates construction will begin in 2026, with an estimated build time of 18 months. The development is expected to create approximately 250 local jobs during construction and generate broader economic benefits for nearby communities, especially for trades and equipment suppliers.

This project adds to Edify Energy’s growing portfolio of clean energy developments across the National Electricity Market (NEM). Headquartered in Sydney, the company has a development pipeline totaling 11.2 GW of utility-scale solar and battery projects.

Among the recent projects progressing through EPBC review are:

  • Brewongle Solar Farm (NSW): 90 MW solar + 90 MW / 180 MWh BESS

  • Peninsula Solar Farm (NSW): 80 MW solar + 80 MW / 160 MWh BESS

  • Burroway Solar Farm (NSW): 100 MW solar + 100 MW / 400 MWh BESS

All three projects have received non-controlled action determinations under the EPBC Act, enabling them to proceed without further Commonwealth environmental assessment.

Other major Edify developments include:

  • Muskerry Solar Power Station (Victoria): 250 MW solar + 200 MW / 800 MWh battery

  • Smoky Creek & Majors Creek (Queensland): Combined 750 MW solar and battery projects

Beyond project development, Edify currently manages operations for six solar farms and four BESS facilities that it has previously delivered and financed.
